Some testers have already been able to try out the PS5 Pro. A few experts are now highlighting PSSR as a major feature of the PS5 Pro and explaining why this is a significant improvement. At least if you want to play in 4K.
The experts from Digital Foundry were able to test the PS5 Pro at the Tokyo Game Show, which took place at the end of September 2024. Overall, two games could be tested on the PS5 Pro:
- Gran Turismo 7
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (in the title image)
Both games feel significantly better on the PS5 Pro. The games owe this largely to one feature: PSSR. The experts from Digital Foundry explain this in their podcast on YouTube.

What do the testers say? John Linneman from Digital Foundry stated that in particular, PSSR represents a significant improvement for image quality. He says (via wccftech.com):
The use of PSSR feels like lifting a veil off the terrible image quality of the performance mode of the base model.
Thanks to PSSR, the game now offers a clean 4K presentation with sharp image quality and without the visual problems that plagued the performance mode of the normal PS5. This represents a significant improvement and is sure to please many players who want to experience their games in 4K.
What about Gran Turismo 7? The other game, Gran Turismo 7, also shows some impressive improvements. PSSR allows the game to run at 60 FPS with ray tracing reflections and still look good even at a reduced resolution.
PSSR is currently only available with the PS5 Pro hardware
What is PSSR? PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution and is an AI-driven upscaling technology for the PS5: Games are rendered at a lower resolution and then upscaled to a higher resolution. Similar technologies have already been used on PC with DLSS (Nvidia) and FSR (AMD). Currently, PSSR is only supported by the PS5 Pro and not by the normal PS5.
