The PS4 update 4.00 enters the beta phase tomorrow. We provide a preview of the new features.
On August 16th, the beta program for the system software update 4.00 on the PS4 begins. If you registered for this test phase and were selected as a participant, you will receive an email with instructions for the download.
But also all other PS4 users who do not participate in the beta are informed via the PlayStation Blog about the new features they can look forward to with 4.00. We summarize them.
New Features with the PS4 Update 4.00
New User Interface
The update comes with a new user interface. Apparently, a lot of changes and improvements have been made. These include:
- Redesigned pop-up notifications
- Updated system icons
- New backgrounds for the system.
This is meant to make the interface clearer and more user-friendly.
Quick Menu
By pressing the PS button on your controller, you can access the quick menu. This menu is designed to be faster and more user-friendly:
- The menu now only covers part of the screen with 4.00, so you don’t have to leave the game completely.
- It is possible to display the trophies of the game you are currently playing.
- You can add shortcuts for features you want direct access to – such as the online status of friends or shortcuts to favorite groups.
Share Menu
The share menu, accessed with the share button, has been redesigned similarly to the quick menu. This one is also displayed on part of the screen.
- You can post screenshots directly to the community board, making sharing faster and easier.
- Longer video clips are now possible for Twitter – from 10 seconds up to 140 seconds.
Folders
A useful new feature is folders for organizing content on the PS4. In the content area and in the library, you can create folders to save favorite games and apps in one place and access them quickly.
In the library, there is a new tab called “Purchased Content”. Here, all content you own will be displayed. In the library, only the content currently installed on the PS4 will be shown. Additionally, new tools for sorting and searching will be added to the library.
Trophies
With the upcoming update, you can also view trophies offline. If you do not have an internet connection, there is the option for “Offline Mode”. Additionally:
- With a new button, you can reveal the content of a hidden trophy. The trophy will still be hidden, but you will be able to see the trophy name and related info.
- The symbols for the rarity of a trophy will be changed. Previously, they were filled boxes. The new symbol will look like a pyramid, with the extremely rare trophies at the top.
User Profile
The look of the user profile has been revamped. Now you can see important information about a player at a glance. For example, trophy progress is immediately compared with that of the other player. Additionally, you can use a screenshot as a background image for your profile.
