In the augmented reality game Pokémon GO (iOS, Android), Team Rocket is now roaming in the real world. At an event in New York City, the villains were spotted. They even vandalized a poster with Pikachu. This is part of a social media event by Niantic – accompanying the current in-game event.
What’s going on? Team Rocket has invaded New York City. This was reported by the official Twitter account of Pokémon GO, which published images from the event.
As stated by Forbes, the event featuring “Team Rocket”, the villains from Pokémon, is probably the largest event in the history of Pokémon GO.
The invasion in New York is part of this event, which also takes place in Pokémon GO itself. Here, Team Rocket is active and besieging PokéStops around the world.
Team Rocket also occupied a number of PokéStops in New York City – and players had to fend off as many minions as they could.
The event seemed to take place primarily around Times Square.
Social Media Event at Pokémon GO Attracts a Lot of Attention
Here are the images from New York: Yesterday afternoon, the Twitter account of Pokémon GO suddenly posted images from New York City. There, Team Rocket had invaded.
People speculated about what the minions were up to.
Apparently, they vandalized some posters for Pokémon GO in the real world. They defaced a poster of Pikachu by drawing an R on it and generally rocketified Pikachu.
After that, the minions seem to have retreated from New York.
The campaign has likely achieved its goal: The tweets received thousands of retweets and likes.
This is what happens next: The event seems to reach its next peak tomorrow morning, on Sunday morning. Because a mysterious countdown will run out then.
We will keep you updated on the event on MeinMMO.
