In Pokémon GO, the hunt for Team Rocket and their leader Giovanni continues to the next round. The new special research “A Growing Challenge” is now available.
This is what the new special research looks like: Those who have completed the special research “A Long Shadow” will likely be familiar with “A Growing Challenge”. Because: The new research is a continuation of the first Giovanni quest.
Niantic had previously announced that players could challenge the Rocket leader monthly through special research. And in December, it will again be a matter of defeating Grunts, saving Pokémon, and crafting the Rocket Radar.

Here you will find all tasks of the new special research “A Growing Challenge”. Not all steps are known yet – we will add these here as soon as more information is available.
Chapter 1/6
- Spin 10 PokéStops (500 XP)
- Defeat 3 Team GO Rocket Grunts (500 XP)
- Catch 1 Shadow Pokémon (500 XP)
Rewards: 500 Stardust / 10 Poké Balls / 10 Razz Berries
Chapter 2/6
- Spin a PokéStop for 5 days in a row (750 XP)
- Evolve 15 Shadow Pokémon (750 XP)
- Win 5 Raids (750 XP)
Rewards: 1000 Stardust / 3 Hyper Potions / 3 Revives
Notable: The first two chapters correspond exactly to the challenges presented in the first special research for Giovanni and the Rocket Bosses. It is quite possible that the upcoming chapters may seem familiar to some players.
Rewards – Giovanni now with Zapdos
This is what you get at the end: Previously, after the battle against Giovanni, you could receive a Shadow Articuno. The Rocket leader has now replaced this with Shadow Zapdos, as some players report on reddit.
This also seems to already be possible for players who are still completing “A Long Shadow” – the legendary Pokémon seems to be tied to the month and not to the new questline.
