In Pokémon GO, entire towns are now complaining that no Pokémon spawn in their areas. The reason is the new map update.
These are the locations: On Reddit , a player reports from the island of Salamis in Greece that no Pokémon spawn anywhere on the entire island.
Other regions of the country are also speaking out. For instance, the city of Ioannina, also located in Greece, is reported to have fewer spawns. The island of Poros, located south of Athens, is experiencing the same problem.
This is why it is unplayable: Salamis seems to have been hit particularly hard. It is reportedly that not a single Pokémon spawns there anymore. Gyms and PokéStops are still present, but the spawns have completely disappeared. This means that it is no longer possible to play effectively there.
This is how the error occurred
This is why there are no spawns anymore: Along with the latest update in Pokémon GO, there was a revision of the OSM map. Niantic also uses the data from this map to create their map.
Since the change, the affected regions are marked with a specific designation. This designation is also adopted by Pokémon GO. Every region in the world that is marked this way receives no spawns.
Why are there these designations? There are indeed some areas in the world where there are no spawns at all. This is due to the designation. Schools or churches are also affected.
Some natural areas also have such a designation that prevents spawns. This now includes the areas in Greece. Apparently, a cartographer has marked these regions as a natural area.
What will happen now with these regions? The players in these areas are trying to contact Niantic. They want their areas to be freed from this designation so they can play normally again.
The player who reported the problem on Reddit claims that numerous players from the 80-member community have already dropped out. They do not want to continue playing under these circumstances.
Could the area be saved again? Such errors related to the OSM map occur repeatedly. They are either fixed quickly – or it can take a very long time.
For months, there were two huge nests throughout Berlin that blocked almost all other spawns. They were only fixed now, with the new update.
Whether Niantic will react quickly here and assign spawns back to the area remains to be seen. The community in Greece at least hopes for that.
