In Pokémon GO there are Pokémon with different move sets. Is it possible to influence which moves the evolved forms of Pokémon receive?
All Pokémon come with two moves, which are divided into standard and special moves. Standard moves are weaker than special moves and are used in gym battles to fill the blue charge bars in the upper left of the screen.
When the charge bar is full, you can use the special move. A weaker special move can be used faster, as it consists of 4-5 small charge bars. Stronger special moves have 2-3 bars or even just one. This makes them a bit slower, but they deal more damage.
Can you influence which moves Pokémon receive when they evolve?
Since the moves have different advantages and disadvantages as well as strengths and weaknesses, it would be practical to be able to influence which moves the Pokémon gets after evolution. When a Pokémon evolves, it receives a completely new move set. Rumors often arise here and there about how to influence the moves during the Pokémon’s evolution. In a study, the “Silph Research Group” conducted over 10,000 evolutions to see whether the move set can be determined during the evolution process.
The study found that NONE of the following factors influence the moves when evolving:
- Standard move before evolution
- Special move before evolution
- Level of the Pokémon
- Nickname of the Pokémon during evolution
- Lucky Egg activated during evolution
- Overall rating of the Pokémon
- Highest IV categories – combined
- Pokémon has perfect IV in Attack, Defense, and Stamina – separately
- Pokémon has no perfect IV
- Pokémon has only perfect IV
To ultimately clear away every rumor: You CANNOT influence the moves that Pokémon receive when evolving.
