In Pokémon GO, trainers have been demanding a way to communicate within the game for years. Now, players have renewed hope that a long-awaited in-game chat could soon become a reality after a recent update. We at MeinMMO explain what has happened.
What function is it about? In Pokémon GO, trainers can form friendships and thus fight, trade, or send gifts together. However, communication cannot occur through the game.
This missing feature has been criticized by many trainers for a long time. After all, it is useful to discuss strategies before raids or level-ups. However, this is only possible through other external platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, or Discord.
Therefore, the demand for an in-game chat is growing louder among many trainers. However, there are new hopes that this could soon become a reality. We explain why.
This is why trainers have hope for an in-game chat again
As trainer SambucaSebi shows in his reddit post, Niantic has added a new function to its other augmented reality game Ingress Prime. Under “Niantic Social,” players there have had the option to chat and coordinate with each other for a few days now.
As StevensDs, another reddit user, explains in the comments, this chat functions similarly to Discord and is quite easy to use. Trainer JGCInt also goes into more detail about the chat function in his comment.
Yes, and you can create communities within the game (no external apps required) and some other things. That’s pretty cool. Oh, and you can also contact your PoGo/Pikmin friends when they are available to chat. This way, you can coordinate trade actions/friendship level ups.

Will there be an in-game chat in Pokémon GO soon?
Since Ingress Prime has now received an in-game chat, many trainers hope that this will soon be implemented in Pokémon GO as well. Comments like that of Heavy-Background-217 can be found on social networks regarding this news.
He writes under the post: “Wait, can we send messages to people in-game?! Ahhhhh, I can’t wait for Niantic Social to come to PoGo” (via reddit.com).
But how likely is this scenario?
Fundamentally, the implementation of an in-game chat after the release in Ingress Prime is conceivable. After all, Niantic hinted last year that they are working on a chat solution for Pokémon GO to replace external apps and simplify in-game coordination.
This suggests that it could soon be possible in Pokémon GO.
What speaks against an in-game chat: However, the protection of players, especially for children and adolescents, plays a crucial role, which is why Niantic would need to make appropriate provisions. Some trainers also view the input rights from Nintendo critically.
Thus, the following comments can be found on reddit (via reddit.com):
- Kel-nage: “Hmmm… I don’t want to be a spoilsport, but I’m really not sure if this will ever come to PoGO. Ingress is obviously Niantic’s IP – so they have a lot of flexibility there. The holders of the IP for PoGO and Pikmin have been very cautious about incorporating broad, unrestricted social functions into their games – therefore I’m not sure if this will be made compatible with all their games”
- ArcanineFan01: “Yes, it’s unlikely that Nintendo would allow it (they own one third of the Pokemon company and own Pikmin). They are pretty opposed to messaging services after the 3DS services were abused.”
- Duarjo: “I’m glad to hear that the likelihood is very low that Nintendo will allow this service in a game associated with its brand… I would hate to see what happens with an in-game chat”
Whether there will actually be an in-game chat in Pokémon GO in the future remains to be seen. If Niantic provides further information on this, you will of course find out here on MeinMMO.
What do you think about the implementation of a chat function in Ingress? Would you like to see this in Pokémon GO as well? Or do you have concerns that a chat would only lead to problems among players? Feel free to share your opinion here in the comments on MeinMMO.
By the way, Niantic is currently working on an update for Mega Evolutions. A find now shows a new mega feature that many trainers have long wished for. We will show you what it is.
