Pokémon GO is hosting an official PvP tournament in the USA soon. Many players see this as the beginning, as it could actually lead to many tournaments being held in PvP.
What kind of tournament is this? This tournament will take place as part of the Pokémon World Championships in Washington D.C. Representatives from various Pokémon games will meet there and hold tournaments.
This time, Pokémon GO is also represented for the first time, as selected players will compete in a small PvP tournament there. You can watch it live on Twitch.
All info about the official PvP tournament
When does the event start? The tournament will take place on August 16. The exact time is not yet known.
How will the tournament proceed? A total of 8 players will compete against each other. They will eliminate each other, and in the end, the grand final will take place.
In each match, there will be a maximum of 5 rounds. The first player to win 3 rounds wins the match.
Beforehand, each player must assemble a team of 6 Pokémon. Each Pokémon must be of a different type. The 6 monsters must then be used throughout the tournament.
Who is participating? The tournament will feature several prominent figures from the Pokémon world. Alongside two employees from Game Freak, Pokémon YouTubers like UnlistedLeaf will also participate.
Also, many players may recognize the name KiengIV. He is known for his spectacular duos and trios in raids.
A lucky fan will also get to participate. However, they must already be on-site and have registered beforehand. A random selection will determine who it will be.
The commentator for the tournament is also well-known. The YouTuber TrainerTips will commentate the entire event.
How can I watch? The event will be streamed live on Twitch. So be sure to check out the official Twitch channel of Pokémon on the day of the competition. We will embed it here:
Watch the live video of Pokémon on www.twitch.tvWhat do players think about this? The community is somewhat divided. Many fans see it critically, as they could not participate in this tournament or qualify beforehand. Holding something like this at the World Championships is odd. After all, you cannot crown a World Champion if there were only 8 players to choose from.
Other players, especially on Reddit, find the idea cool. They see it as the beginning for Pokémon GO to finally organize such tournaments. This has only happened at GO Fests or was organized by the community itself.
So there could actually be a future, and players hope that PvP tournaments could be held worldwide by Pokémon GO.
As Grimey_Rick writes: “This is really cool. It is fantastic to see how they are finally doing something official with PvP. I was not very excited to get into the mode because the lack of an official league or recognition of competitive matches made the feature seem insignificant.”
Finally, Pokémon GO made some changes to the PvP mode:
