Legendary Shadow Monsters are some of the rarest and strongest attackers in Pokémon GO. Several times a year, Team GO Rocket returns with their leader Giovanni, who brings a new legendary Shadow Monster to each Rocket event. Next up is Shadow Tornadus.
After some time, Shadow Monsters that could previously be captured from Giovanni will also become available in Shadow Raids. This is now the case for the upcoming legendary monster.
Shadow Groudon Returns
What kind of Pokémon is this? This Pokémon is Shadow-Groudon, the legendary Ground Monster from Generation 3. In this event, you will also have the opportunity to obtain this Pokémon as shiny for the first time. Until now, you could only get the monster once from Giovanni.
The event thus represents the first opportunity to acquire additional specimens of the Pokémon and significantly strengthen your raid team.
When will the monster be available? As part of a Shadow Raid weekend, you can challenge and catch Groudon in its Shadow form in Shadow Raids. The event starts on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 6:00 AM and runs until Sunday, September 21, 2025, at 10:00 PM.
On both days, you can also receive an additional free raid pass at gyms. This means that on both Saturday and Sunday, you will have the chance to obtain 2 raid passes to challenge Shadow-Groudon.
How strong is the monster? In its Shadow variant, Groudon is among the strongest attackers in Pokémon GO of the Ground type. It is only surpassed by Primal Groudon and Mega Garchomp. The optimal moveset for Shadow-Groudon consists of the moves Mud Shot and Precipice Blades.
