Once Human monetizes itself through purchases in its shop. Skins and weapons can then be bought with premium currency. Now the developers have reintroduced loot boxes into the game, and fans are not at all satisfied.
Why do fans have a problem? It’s about the latest patch for Once Human, which was rolled out on August 29. In this patch, many bugs and issues were addressed, but new cosmetic items were also introduced, fitting for summer.
While a majority of the skins in the shop were sold directly, the new items of the summer collection are now being sold in loot boxes. Before this collection was offered, there was the set from “Pyro Glide,” which was also sold in loot boxes. Even back then, fans complained about it (via youtube.com), but as it looks now, the developers are continuing with it.
Loot boxes instead of solutions for bugs
What do fans say? The fans are not very happy about the new offer; worse yet, some of them want to boycott the game. In the official announcement on X (formerly Twitter) about the new patch, fans expressed their frustration and commented with the following opinions:
- “I don’t like the gambling aspect of loot boxes. Can we just buy the cosmetics directly? I guarantee that people would be more open to buying if they had the freedom to do so.” – iSupernovaCat
- “We know you need to make money, but let us just buy the [items] we want. No one seems to like loot boxes.” – jat0rz
- “We will not be stacking another box like this. How long has it been, a month since the last one?” – MixelPlx
- “Stop with the damn loot boxes, or I will spend my money on other games instead.” – arentyoukind
- “Enough with these loot boxes and improve the rubber banding, lag, and keep working on servers and a new map. That is more important than boxes.” – KokeshikenMedia
- “Please stop with the loot boxes! Let us just buy the cosmetics” – shadowISworse
While many are complaining about the loot boxes, it becomes clear that Once Human still has issues with bugs as well as connections to the servers. Some fans are also complaining about rubber banding.
What is the problem with loot boxes? Loot boxes contain items that you can only obtain through luck. You pay real money, get to open a box, and then have a % chance to get the item you want. Usually, the best items are even rarer to obtain.
This means that players often spend more money to get the item they want. Essentially, this is gambling, as you quickly find yourself spending more and more until you get the item you wanted.
This can end pretty badly. Games like Counter-Strike with its skins, FIFA with its cards, or the old Call of Duties with their supply drops have left a bitter taste, and for many fans, this is a topic they do not want to see in their games.
