1. FC Köln tried something new in the test match against AC Milan: bodycams, allowing viewers to see the game from the players’ perspective. It resembled video games a bit – like FIFA 23.
What kind of test was that? During the Telekom Cup match between the Kölner and AC Milan, some new technologies for football transmission were tested.
Among other things, a referee camera, new data collection in the shoes of some players, and bodycams were used.
The latter showed the game from an unusual perspective: Kölner players Timo Hübers and Tim Lemperle were equipped with the camera, allowing viewers to see different scenes of the match directly from their viewpoint.
And somehow it all felt like a VR game, or at least like the first-person camera of a video game. Although the usual overview of a football transmission was missing, one was right in the middle of the action. Especially the players’ arms, which occasionally appeared in front of the camera, indeed felt like a VR or first-person mode for games like FIFA 23.

Wouldn’t that be something for FIFA 23?
Could FIFA benefit from such a camera? Well, anyone who wants to play “FIFA in Virtual Reality” can probably just go outside and play a round of football. However, playing in a Bundesliga stadium is an opportunity that is quite rare.

Overall, the “bodycam view” from the video seems like something that would fit well with FIFA 23. However, some key factors would naturally be missing: the broad overview of the game that one needs for a regular FIFA match would be lost. It probably wouldn’t allow for truly competitive play.
On the other hand, the atmosphere, like the realistic stadiums or the mood from the stands, could be presented very differently. At least for a change, it might be fun to dive fully into the game with the first-person view for a few minutes.
Moreover, there is somewhat similar functionality already present in FIFA 22: the “Pro Cam” allows a single player to be played from a somewhat distant follower’s perspective. Especially when forming a custom player into a world star in career mode, such a first-person perspective could offer a bit more immersion as the next step.
