Baldur’s Gate 3 lets you have many options to solve problems. Most of them are not immediately obvious. A player wanted to be creative, albeit out of panic, and has now permanently changed an important character.
Spoiler Alert: This is about an important NPC who has a connection to one of your companions that you only discover late in Act 1. You actually meet the NPC much later.
Which NPC is it about?
- Duke Ulder Ravengard is the father of Wyll and one of the most important figures in Baldur’s Gate. Wyll is one of the companions in Baldur’s Gate 3.
- The Duke is kidnapped in Act 1 and taken to the Absolute. You are supposed to rescue him as part of some quests and meet him several times in the game.
- Whether and how you rescue Ravengard is up to you – the outcome of several story plots can change drastically based on your decisions.
Why was Ulder Ravengard transformed? The user Kleonnie on Reddit explains that he was supposed to save Ravengard from a precarious situation. However, the Duke was stunned during the process.
Actually, the user only needed to “help” the Duke with the appropriate ability but did not know that. In a panic, he resorted to another option: the spell “Alter Self” (or: “Seeming”).
This changes the appearance of a character. Kleonnie hopes that Ravengard turns into a gnome or halfling. These characters are light enough to be thrown. Yes, that works too and is surprisingly powerful.
Instead, Ravengard became a female elf, and before Kleonnie could dispel the spell, Ravengard left the group, still as a woman. And that’s now permanent.

“Devils hate this trick”
The community finds this bug amusing but sees a very positive twist in it. Wyll has made a pact with Mizora to save his father. However, she can no longer do that since Wyll no longer has a father, but a mother.
Accordingly, Wyll shouldn’t have to uphold his part of the bargain anymore. A brilliant move that the game should reward. After all, all other possibilities are considered, such as accidentally turning everyone into cats.
Unfortunately, it seems that this is indeed just a bug; Mizora apparently does not react to the new gender of Ravengard’s father… mother… so… Ulder Ravengard.
In a similar way, other players have apparently already transformed characters like advisor Florrick into a half-orc or a golden dragonborn, leading to confusing scenes at the end.
