Do you remember when you really got lost in World of Warcraft? An Azeroth newbie is experiencing just that now and sharing it with the community.
How does one start playing WoW in 2025? Some cynic might say: Best not to at all. But that didn’t stop a certain ConnorAsian from stepping into the wonderful world of Warcraft for the first time a few days ago. And his start is as clichéd as it is fitting.
In a picture on Reddit, he shows what his life looks like since then: He feeds on junk food like pepperoni pizza and washes it down with soft drinks. Flanked by all kinds of wonderful pop culture knick-knacks, the gaming corner features a waifu mat for his keyboard and mouse. But that was just the harmless beginning.
The few hours old update picture (via Reddit) shows empty cans, a pizza box, leftover food, and even more junk food – all in the spirit of: “Well, that escalated quickly”.
In 20 years of WoW, a lot has happened; here are some highlights:
How does the community react to the picture? Many WoW players are reminded of their own beginnings. This is reflected not only in the over 11,000 upvotes but also in many of the over 1,200 comments.
- Shizz69429 writes on Reddit: “It’s good to see that new players respect the tradition.”
- Restinpeep69 recalls on Reddit: “Classic night elf hunter, pizza, and a Mountain Dew. Looks like 2004 to me – lol.”
- hdotadotc also feels the nostalgia (via Reddit): “Straight out of the 2000s, my youth longs for that again.”
- BigDinkyDongDotCom praises on Reddit: “Pizza, Mountain Dew, a katana, a parent’s house. You have it all.”
- crow917 jokes on Reddit: “That is hypnotically clichéd.”
Journey to the Past
What were the beginnings of MeinMMO editor Karsten Scholz like? Before I got into WoW myself in Spring 2005, I had my first contact with an Azeroth hero outside my own four walls.
I remember a mostly dark basement floor, a constantly full ashtray, and the stature of my good buddy Jens, illuminated by the hazy glow from the monitor. Back then in raids, he had to decide whether to understand his group leader on TeamSpeak or play somewhat smoothly. Both at once, that was not possible. Almost 20 years ago … I’m old.
As a non-smoker and blessed with large windows without blinds, my 23 sqm training flat in Cologne was clearly much brighter at the time. But surely many things here also screamed “nerdy clichéd gamer” who spent every free minute in WoW.
And that, even though my PC was still quite weak at the beginning (a catalog order, urgh) and due to the lack of an DSL flat rate, I had to use a tool called SmartSurfer to find the cheapest internet tariff.
It was wild but incredibly exciting times. By the way, in time for WoW’s anniversary, MeinMMO demon Cortyn looked back at 20 years of World of Warcraft and explained what makes the game so good: 20 years of World of Warcraft – It is indeed more than just a game
