Normally, players in Baldur’s Gate 3 can only fight battles with a group of 4 characters. A fan wanted to get some extra help and added 67 more NPCs to defeat one of the hardest bosses.
How did the fight go? The Reddit user xehparr wanted to take on Guardian Grym in the Forge of Grym in Honour Mode. This is the hardest fight in Act 1. The battle against the metal colossus is necessary to unlock the forge. With this, you can craft up to 2 powerful equipment items.
To ensure his group survived the difficult fight, he reportedly kidnapped 67 NPCs for 6 hours. This formed a squad that would make many MMO raid groups green with envy.
He used the additional characters in the fight as a shield to absorb damage from the golem. However, by the time it was his turn, every single character had their turn. As the thread creator states, the rounds were very long.
Especially surprising: The PC endured this gigantic amount of rounds. Only Halsin managed to interrupt the game once. After a restart from the main menu, the fight continued normally.
Kidnapping NPCs Leads to Success
How did the fight end? According to xehparr, it took 1.5 hours for the fight to conclude. He left the fighting arena as a happy winner, with only his own three characters surviving in the end. All others fell victim to the golem or the lava.
Due to the fact that a large portion of the NPCs died in the lava, there were no experience points for the player. In the end, not many EXP were gained, despite the many companions.
How did he kidnap the NPCs? To kidnap NPCs, you need a strength potion and the “Improvised Weapon” feature. This allows you to carry NPCs around. How exactly the mechanism works and where the thread creator got the trick from can be seen in a YouTube video by Morgana Evelyn starting at 32:42 minutes.
How is the community reacting? Many fans are amazed at how long such rounds take. Some users joke that the player would still be in this fight to this day. Another user adds that he is still waiting for his second round.
User thatonemoze sums it up even funnier: “Bro, you can prepare yourself a 3-course meal between your characters’ rounds.”
Besides kidnapping NPCs, there are also other methods to simply defeat Grym. One player even managed to beat the boss in just 2 rounds. How he achieved this can be found on MeinMMO: Baldur’s Gate 3: The hardest fight in Act 1 becomes easy when played wrong
