Why is airflow important? Airflow refers to the circulation of air in a device. All devices under load produce heat, which needs to go somewhere. Without fans, it will get increasingly hotter in your system until the hardware shuts down due to overheating protection. Fans ensure that hot air is expelled and that heat buildup is avoided.
What is the problem with too many fans? Stuffing your case full of fans can lead to several issues:
On the one hand, too many fans can obstruct each other, turbulence can occur, and cooling performance can even decrease. A clear, directed airflow is more effective than uncontrolled chaos in the computer.
On the other hand, more fans usually mean more noise, especially if they have to run at high speeds because the airflow is not optimal. Additionally, every extra fan requires power, space, and can complicate cable management. This is especially true in small cases where space can be extremely valuable.
What is the recommendation? Fewer, but strategically placed fans with good airflow are often better than as many fans as possible without a clear concept. Generally, two to three well-placed fans are sufficient: One in the front (Intake), one in the back (Exhaust), and depending on the CPU cooler, one more at the top.
