A player buys an OLED monitor on Amazon, but he receives two devices. He would like to return the second monitor because he is worried that he might be stuck with the costs. However, Amazon reassures him with a special gesture.
A player reports that he ordered a new gaming monitor on Amazon. Specifically, it is the Alienware 32 4K OLED. This costs around 1,200 euros and was reduced to about 900 euros for Black Friday.
But the surprise is great, as Amazon not only sent him one monitor but two. And there is a good reason for this, as someone else explains later.
How does the player react? With two monitors, he probably felt a bit uneasy and contacted Amazon to return the monitor. But he is surprised when Amazon support explains that he doesn’t need to return the second device. He shared a screenshot of the chat with customer support. The Amazon customer service writes to him (via Reddit.com):
When I check here, I can see and confirm that you have already received a refund for this item. And I can confirm that it was delivered to your delivery address. Please do not worry about the item; it will not be charged to you. Please consider the item as an early gift from Amazon. I hope this helps you.
Why is this surprising? After all, this is an expensive device that currently costs more than 900 euros on sale. In other cases, Amazon has been significantly less generous: They refused to refund a fake graphics card that a family man had received.
Amazon sent a second shipment because the first shipment was lost
Why did Amazon send two devices in the first place? Another user in the post explains that this can happen, among other reasons, when shipments are declared “lost”:
- You order an item and it gets lost on the way to you. You then read the notice in the Amazon app: “Your shipment may be lost.”
- Amazon sends you the product a second time, but then the local postal service finally finds the lost shipment and delivers it to you as well.
- A little later, you receive the product twice. Once for the new order and once for the old order, which was considered “lost” in the meantime.
In many cases, returning items to Amazon is significantly more expensive than simply writing off the sent product. Someone writes on Reddit:
This happened to me some time ago with ~$400 Beyerdynamic headphones. I would bet what happened is this: 1 package lost in the mail, so the shipping refunded the order and ordered a new model. The customer receives the new headphones and is satisfied. Then, about a week later, the local postal service finally found the package and sent it. The customer is confused because he has a second nice monitor. Amazon shrugs and says, “You win, kid. Have fun.”
Normally, you have to return excess delivered goods
What usually happens with double shipments? Normally, you do not own excess delivered goods, and you have to report the items. After all, you only made a purchase contract with Amazon or the other company for a specific quantity. MeinMMO spoke with a lawyer and asked what to do if you receive too much merchandise. He explains:
Even if you would like to keep the excess delivery, you do not have the right to do so. In such cases, you are legally considered “enriched” without a legal reason. Therefore, you must help return the goods to the seller. If you remain stubborn as a customer, even criminal charges may be considered.
In principle, the lawyer also explains that the error of the excess delivery lies with the seller and not the customer. Therefore, the seller must also bear the error and take care of the solution.
More incidents on Amazon: Another player has significantly less luck when ordering on Amazon: A player buys a new graphics card on Amazon, but he only receives a fake. This only becomes apparent when he wants to connect the GPU to his computer. The scam is repeatedly used on Amazon to harm buyers and Amazon: A player buys a new graphics card on Amazon for 1,900 euros, only realizes it is a counterfeit when he wants to install it in his PC
