A gamer has built a gaming PC from used parts and paid less than 30 euros. While the hardware is no longer quite new, it still offers more than enough performance for some games.
A gamer proudly reports on Reddit that he has built a new gaming PC. He paid only about 30 euros for the entire setup.
What’s inside the “new” gaming PC:
- Case: Dell T7810 Workstation
- CPU: Intel Xeon e5-2603 v3
- RAM: 16 GB DDR4 (4×4 GB)
- Graphics card: GTX 980 Ti
- Power supply: Proprietary power supply from Dell with 685 watts
- Storage: 120 GB SSD
For the case with CPU, power supply, and memory, he paid $6.99, $15 for the graphics card, and another $10 for the SSD. In the end, he spent just under $33 for his entire gaming PC. Converted, that’s about 30 euros.
Hardware is outdated but still more than sufficient for many games
However, the hardware is not really new anymore: the GTX 980 Ti is from 2015 and is now almost 10 years old. The same applies to the installed CPU.
How fast is the hardware still today? If you mainly play in Full HD and older titles, then the GTX 980 Ti is still more than sufficient and can compete with a new RTX 4060 (via YouTube.com):
- Borderlands 3 (Ultra, 54 FPS),
- Cyberpunk 2077 (High, 45 FPS)
- GTA V (Ultra, 66 FPS),
- Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1 (Very high, 64 FPS)
However, you should be aware that with such an old graphics card, you will not receive software updates anymore and also do not have access to new features like DLSS and Ray tracing. For DLSS, you need at least a graphics card from the RTX 2000 series. There are further restrictions to consider for DLSS 4.0.
Old hardware is only worth it in a few cases
Is old hardware worth it at all? The problem with very old components is often that they self-limit. For example: You can only equip a 10-year-old processor with a similarly old motherboard and DDR3 memory. Therefore, you will never experience modern features. Additionally, older CPUs often do not operate very cost-efficiently. The Intel Xeon e5-2603 v3 used here at least supports DDR4.
For modern hardware, you already have to replace the entire system (motherboard, memory, and CPU). Upgrading old hardware with similarly old hardware is rarely worthwhile.
