The MMO shooter Planetside 2 is currently experiencing FPS issues in the beta on PlayStation 4. They fluctuate too much.
The British gaming magazine eurogamer.net has examined the current beta of Planetside 2 on PS4 and monitored its performance. Currently, Planetside 2 is running in a beta version on Sony’s console.
The goal set by the development studio DGC was to make Planetside 2 run on PlayStation 4 as closely as possible to the ultra setting on PC, albeit with a modified interface. According to journalists, Planetside 2 accomplishes this well. They explicitly praise the sharpness of the image and the control with the controller. However, there are issues with the frames-per-second. For the final release, the developers plan a fixed cap of 30 FPS. In the PlayStation 4 beta, such a fixed limit has not yet been implemented.
Therefore, the FPS currently fluctuate. In calm areas and moments, they rise to 60, while during smaller skirmishes the FPS rate remains at 45. However, when things get intense and more players join a battle, it can drop below the magical threshold of 30. Additionally, screen tearing (image distortions) is a recurring issue. This could worsen by release, it is feared, as more players than in the beta will be active. Thus, firefights could become even more intense – as could the FPS problems.
We will have to wait and see how the release version with the 30 FPS cap looks. However, it is clear why the developers of Planetside 2 have moved away from the originally intended 60 frames per second target.
