For a long time, it has been quiet around the online shooter Planetside 2. But now a new update has been released. This reminds us how little is actually happening with the only MMO shooter or how little we at least hear about it.
Planetside 2 is considered by many as “the only true MMO shooter.” Gigantic battles between hundreds of players shooting at each other simultaneously. In January 2015, with 1158 players, a world record for the most participants in a battle was set.
Two years ago, there were still regular updates about the game. Back then, Planetside 2 wanted to conquer the consoles and really take off. But by now, Planetside 2 has disappeared from the public eye.
Planetside 2 is just plodding along in 2017.
Planetside 2: Farewell to the Public instead of “Golden Future”
Since Planetside 2 came to the PS4 back in June 2015 and it was said: “The game is earning too little money, we need to adjust the microtransactions” (October 2015) – the game has pretty much faded from the public eye. Something was mentioned again at the end of 2016 about base building. But on most gaming sites, Planetside 2 has not been in the spotlight since then.
In October 2015, the then-head of Sony Online Entertainment, John Smedley, still envisioned a “golden future” for Planetside 2. But the opposite seems to have occurred: Planetside 2 is at risk of fading into obscurity.
The political change at the publisher and developer Daybreak seems to have hit Planetside 2, so that not much is really happening that is being reported. Daybreak seems to be more focused on saving costs since the cancellation of Everquest Next. The energy and resources they have are being directed into the Twitch hit H1Z1: King of the Kill.

The Chief Creative at Planetside 2, Mathew Higby, has been gone since February 2015; since May 2016, he has been working for Massive on The Division.
So what’s happening with Planetside 2 right now?
Stable Player Numbers in Planetside 2 – New Update Now Changes Indar
The player numbers on Steamcharts are always around 2,000 concurrently active players. PlanetSide 2 has a fairly stable player base. As always, the state of the shooter is up for debate.
Some feel that certain systems need to be overhauled and generally new content is lacking – also the “flow” of the fights should be optimized as they often come to a standstill. Others are quite satisfied with what they have.
Adjustments to the Continent Indar
The developer team has now released a larger update that addresses adjustments to the continent Indar to make battles smoother and more seamless.
Especially when it comes to base warfare, this update should enhance the experience. Therefore, the adjustments mainly focus on the large bases Ceres Hydroponics, TI Alloys, and The Crown.

New Weapons and Another Armor
Another new feature concerns how you “unlock” new continents. Previously, 900 players were required before a new continent was accessible. Now it is only 600.
And so the online shooter Planetside 2 just continues along.
For those who want to learn more about Planetside 2, the videos of the YouTuber Wrel are probably the best place to start. He came from the community and became part of the Planetside 2 design team in 2016.
In this video, he explains, for example, the decision to focus so much attention on Indar.
