The new Google phones will be released on October 12 with the Pixel 8. However, those hoping for the cheaper A-series may be disappointed.
With the new 8 series, Google’s new Pixel models will soon hit the market:
- The Google Pixel 8 starting at 799 euros.
- The Google Pixel 8 Pro starting at 1,099 euros.
All devices will feature Google’s new in-house processor “Google Tensor G3”.
But those hoping that Google will soon release a cheaper model may be disappointed. Google itself stated that no further models will follow in the near future.
Too many compromises if a cheaper model were to be offered
What is the problem? Nanda Ramachandran, Vice President at Google Mobile Business, stated that there are currently no plans for a cheaper Google Pixel phone (via androidpolice.com).
“We would have to make too many compromises,” Ramachandran said, adding that it would require “too many compromises” to bundle features such as the new AI smartphones, a robust camera, and the associated security framework for 200 euros.
With the previous models of the A series, the compromises would not have been as significant: The Google Pixel 7a, for example, uses the Tensor G2 chip, which is also found in the top model, the Google Pixel 7 Pro. Therefore, you get more or less the same performance as with the top model.
What is happening right now? With the new “Pixel 8” devices, quite a bit has changed, and Google is offering several new features:
- faster hardware
- new camera systems
- extended seven-year support for software and security updates
- AI assistant systems
For this reason, the price of the new models was also adjusted. Ramachandran explained that it would not make sense for Google to offer a significantly cheaper model. Because, in order to do so, they would have to shrink the features so much that it wouldn’t be reasonable.
