An interesting surprise was presented by Microsoft at the E3 press conference: Together with the developer studio Rare, they showcased a gameplay trailer of the pirate MMORPG Sea of Thieves.
Not much has been revealed about the game yet, but the video already suggests a lot. The trailer shows how you wake up on a tropical island next to a camp as a pirate and make your way to the beach after hearing cannon fire. There lies a huge ship at anchor, which you approach with some other players.
Join a pirate crew
Apparently, you need a well-coordinated crew to navigate ships across the seas. Each player seems to have to perform different tasks: one takes the helm, another looks after the rigging, yet another mans the lookout, while a few players prepare the cannons. Teamwork seems to be important. In the trailer, you can also see the crew encountering another ship and a fierce sea battle ensues. Apparently, PvP is also possible.
As a pirate, however, there is much more to do than just sail the seas and engage in naval battles with other ships. Islands want to be explored, where treasures are hidden. Together with the crew, you explore these islands and even have to take on the undead. It seems that you will control your character from a first-person perspective, which creates a very good atmosphere in the trailer. This is supported by the comic-like but very detailed graphics.
Sea of Thieves will be released for both Windows 10 PCs and Xbox One. It is not yet known if there will be a crossplay feature. It is also not yet clear when the MMORPG will be released. Microsoft and Rare will likely publish more information about Sea of Thieves in the coming months. More might also be seen at Gamescom, which takes place from August 5 to 9 in Cologne.
