During the Games Showcase 2020 on July 23, the first online RPG for the upcoming Xbox Series X was announced. This is Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis. Its “standard version” only released this year for us in the West for PC and Xbox One. However, New Genesis is referred to as a “brand new game” in the series.
What is Phantasy Star Online 2? Phantasy Star Online 2 mixes elements of fantasy and science fiction. It features a very active combat system and 9 different classes, which you can switch between at any time.
Similar to Guild Wars 1, you enter areas together with other players. So, it’s more of an online co-op experience than a full-fledged MMORPG with an open world.
The RPG just launched in the West in 2020 and had some launch difficulties. However, it is now well received by many players.
What is new now? During the showcase event, it was announced that Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis will be released for the new Xbox Series X, which is not surprising since Microsoft is involved in the distribution in the West.
However, the inscriptions “New Genesis” and “Coming 2021” that you see at the end of the trailer are new. Apparently, this involves a major rework of the game.

What is behind “New Genesis”? A tweet from the developers suggests that this is a fresh and revised version of the game that will be released globally, including in Japan.
In further messages to users on Twitter, it is stated that the graphics and game systems will be overhauled with the update. Even the trailer looks visually more appealing and modern than the previous content of the game.
Additionally, the Twitter account indicates that you will be able to play your old account on the new Xbox Series X as well.
