During gamescom 2024, there was new information, impressions, and trailers about Path of Exile 2. The focus was often on the quality of the boss fights, which are said to differ significantly from those in the predecessor and competitors like Diablo 4.
What are the insights about Path of Exile 2? The more than 100 bosses available at launch are said to differ significantly from those in the predecessor. In a new trailer, Game Director Mark Roberts explained during gamescom 2024:
- all bosses in Path of Exile 2 have been designed, balanced, and animated from the ground up, not a single existing asset is said to have been reused, and all bosses are meant to feel unique
- the design of the mechanics benefits from the enormous experience gained over the past decade with Path of Exile
- the result is, according to Mark Roberts, a package “where the best of what is possible in boss encounters from an action RPG environment with Soulslike mechanics comes together”
- part of the bosses were created around a narrative and thus fits well into the respective storyline
- all other bosses stem from the limitless creativity of the designers, offering crazy, unique designs, including for example hundreds of tentacles, thousands of teeth, or bodies that seem to consist of multiple heads
- over time, many more new bosses are planned to be added to the game
- unlike in the predecessor, in PoE 2, you must bring a boss’s health from 100% to zero in one attempt – if this fails, you get stuck and have to try again
- you then need to learn the timing of the attacks and the different animations, actively dodge them or – if possible – block them, and strike back strategically during safe windows
- when you achieve that and finally defeat a boss, the victory feels all the more rewarding

What else is known about the bosses of PoE 2? Already in July 2023, MeinMMO reported that the developers plan many adjustments compared to the popular predecessor Path of Exile. The fights are said to feel slower and more strategic. Dodging rolls should be more important in the fights than before, and targeted blocking of certain melee and ranged attacks is possible.
Those who perfect their timing will even be rewarded with a parry. If your hero dies, all monsters on the map respawn, and you lose a portion of earned experience points. This leads to further comparisons with the Souls games from FromSoftware.
When can I play Path of Exile 2? The action RPG from Grinding Gear Games will launch in Early Access on October 15, 2024, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. The monetization of the free-to-play game is expected to be as fair as in the first part, with an in-game shop for cosmetic offerings and conveniences like more inventory space.
The developers promise a story campaign for part 2 that should keep you engaged for about 40 to 50 hours. You can expect many freedoms in building your builds and the exciting choice of twelve character classes. Additionally, in-depth equipment and skill systems, as well as a fresh endgame experience are coming.
