At ChinaJoy, the new action RPG Pascal’s Wager was presented in more detail. First images have been circulating since 2018, but a trailer shows: A new game for every Dark Souls fan is on the way.
What is Pascal’s Wager? Pascal’s Wager: Annunciation will be an action role-playing game in the style of Dark Souls or Bloodborne by the Chinese indie developer TipWorks. It is set to be released on mobile platforms for Android and iOS. It was already presented at the E3 2019. However, new information about the game was revealed at ChinaJoy.
The game resembles the popular “Soulsborne” series in both looks and gameplay style. Enemies apparently have specific attack patterns and health bars, and battles seem to function through special combos and various weapons.
When is Pascal’s Wager coming out? A release date for Pascal’s Wager has not yet been disclosed. Although the game was presented in China, the presentation was entirely in English. It is therefore likely to be released directly for the international market.
On the official website of Pascal’s Wager, interested parties can already sign up for a beta.
These details about Pascal’s Wager we already know
The features of Pascal’s Wager: The special aspect of Pascal’s Wager is the various characters available to players. Unlike in Dark Souls, there are six different playable characters to choose from. Two of them have already been introduced: Terrence, a former executioner of the church, and Viola, a former courier with a penchant for firearms.
The trailer already shows some gameplay. Equipment and skills seem to play a big role. The combat against enemies looks tactical and seems to require quite a bit of skill.
The “Dark Souls” series is known for its challenging fights, frequent player deaths, and its unique, hard, and exciting boss battles. At least bosses have also been hinted at. Frequent deaths thus sound plausible.
This could be the story: Additionally, the first scenes already promise a story for players to explore. A small creature is delighted at the sight of a “living human,” which could hint at a kind of afterlife or realm of the dead.
Moreover, the title of the game already promises a tendency towards religious themes. The “Pascal’s Wager” describes roughly speaking a thought model regarding belief in God:
- If you believe in God and are right, you will be rewarded
- If you believe in God and are wrong, nothing happens
- If you do not believe in God and are right, nothing happens either
- If you do not believe in God and are wrong, punishment is threatened
Accordingly, you have less to lose by believing in God than if you do not. As a basis for a game, this promises interesting drama and possibly many conflicts and decisions.
