What is bituminous coal? Bituminous coal can easily be confused with charcoal, which you can craft at your base. In contrast, you must mine bituminous coal from seams that you find on the map.
What do you need bituminous coal for? You mainly need bituminous coal to craft refined iron bars. You need these to create better weapons and ammunition. Unless you still want to run around with a bow and arrow later.

Finding and mining bituminous coal
Where can you find bituminous coal? You can find bituminous coal in various locations on the map:
- The best spots to mine coal: (-157, -92), (-97, -120), (189, -40) and (290, -20).
- In dungeons: On one hand, you can find bituminous coal in random dungeons. However, you need a bit of luck for that. In the dark dungeons, coal is hard to distinguish from stone. Therefore, take a torch with you. In dungeons, you can also find ancient components.
- In the northernmost part of the map: On the other hand, you can find coal in the large desert region located at the very north of the map. Furthermore, Anubis spawns here, whom we count among the best Pals in combat.
- In the western desert: There is also a smaller desert in the west of the map. You can also find coal here.
- Enemies that drop coal: Blazamut, Blazamut Ryu, Menasting
Once you have mined all the coal, you need to wait a bit. After some time, the coal seam will regenerate, and you can mine it again.
Tips for bituminous coal: Before heading into the desert, you should craft heat-resistant armor. Otherwise, you will suffer from the heat and lose health points. You can craft the tropical attire starting at level 9. You need 3 fabrics, 2 fire glands, and a primitive workbench for this.
Also, clear some space in your inventory beforehand, as bituminous coal is quite heavy and takes up a lot of space. Take Cattiva with you as support, who can temporarily increase your carrying capacity by 50 points. We count Cattiva among the best starters in Palworld.
Building a coal mine at your base
With the Sakurajima update, the developers added the possibility for you to establish your own coal mine at your base. This way, you no longer have to search for coal deposits on the map. The coal mine works similarly to the lumber camp or quarry, which you can also build.
Prerequisites for the coal mine are level 53 and 5 ancient technology points. Additionally, you will need the following resources for the coal mine:
- 70 stones
- 100 coal
- 30 palladium fragments
