In the coming months, several releases of so-called hero shooters for PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One are to be expected. With Overwatch, Battleborn and Paladins , there are 3 promising incarnations of this genre to choose from. But which of the games should you choose? What can you expect from each title, and which fits best with your personal preferences? We have created a comparison and try to introduce you to the individual games.
Paladins – Free2Play action with collection factor
From the developer studio HiRez comes the game “Paladins: Champions of the Realm.” What was initially planned as a title with few characters but many customization options in the first weeks of beta testing has now changed significantly. Similar to SMITE, the developers’ MOBA representative, they want to establish a high number of heroes whose play style can only be slightly adjusted in matches.
The core aspect of the game is fast-paced, tight matches where players compete against each other in a classic 5vs5 manner on different maps. The game modes differ only slightly (so far): sometimes control points must be captured, or special payloads must be escorted. This is somewhat “ordinary,” but certainly solid and fun.
The selection of characters is currently still small, but they all have different abilities and can be individually adjusted a bit. From the protective knight with a large shield to the stealthy elf assassin and a fanatical dwarf engineer, everything is represented.
Unique features: Free2Play, card system
Unlike other representatives of the genre, Paladins is supposed to remain Free2Play even after release, meaning you do not have to spend a single cent to get a comprehensive picture of the game.
Another factor is the card system. In Paladins, various champions can be improved and customized through “game cards” to give abilities additional effects or make characters simply more resilient. Cards can be earned through in-game currency or purchased with real money. The same goes for the champions themselves.
DLCs – What is there after the launch?
Since Paladins wants to follow in the footsteps of the MOBA “Smite,” the future of the game is clearly defined. New characters and thus additional maps are to be introduced at more or less regular intervals, which allow for further adjustments to the abilities.
It is important to mention that Paladins: Champions of the Realm is currently still in a very early beta stage. The developer studio HiRez does not shy away from completely throwing design ideas overboard to try something new.
