With the major content patch 6.2 in World of Warcraft (WoW), Blizzard introduced a new type of follower: The ships. Unlike humanoid companions, ships can be permanently destroyed if they fail a mission. For this reason, it is important to equip the floating underlings with the right gear to minimize the risk. We will show you where to find the different components.
The basic design of ships in World of Warcraft
In terms of basic structure, all ships are similar: Each has up to 4 different bonuses that can counter certain events during the voyage. The first two slots are fixed and cannot be changed. The first slot determines the type of ship: A destroyer, for example, always counters a submarine. The second slot determines the crew. A blood elf crew, for example, works particularly fast, while undead increase the mission’s success chance.
For us, only the 3rd and 4th slots are really relevant. This is the ship equipment and is unlocked when reaching new quality levels. At rare (blue), the 3rd slot is available, and at epic (purple), the 4th.
These upgrades are random at first, but they can be swapped – as long as you have something to trade! A vendor in your shipyard sells these exchangeable spare parts, but only if the blueprints have already been found.
These blueprints can be obtained through quests
The first blueprint is hard to miss. You receive it as part of the introductory quest chain of the shipyard and can subsequently purchase the corresponding component infinitely in the shipyard.

Blueprints through reputation
You can obtain two of these in the Tanaan Jungle, if you gather reputation with Vol’jin’s Head Hunters (Horde) or the Hand of the Prophet (Alliance).
The Tuskarr Fishing Net is available starting from a reputation level of Friendly and costs 200 gold pieces. The blueprint for Unsinkable requires at least Respectful reputation and costs a hefty 800 gold coins.

- Unsinkable counters the destruction of the ship upon mission failure (consumed).
Blueprints from Raids in World of Warcraft
You can find another blueprint in the new raid instance Hellfire Citadel from the Iron Reaver on all difficulty levels. A quick visit with the Raid Finder might pay off, as the blueprint: Internal Gyrostabilizer is often needed.

Plenty of blueprints from drops in the Tanaan Jungle of World of Warcraft
The rare and elite mobs of the Tanaan Jungle have snagged most of the blueprints. To track them down, you either need plenty of time or a large dose of luck. A click on the respective adversary leads you to a map where you can see the enemy’s location – if they are present.
The recipe for the bilge pump can be found at Belgork, northwest of the Hellfire Citadel.

The Demon Smith Damorka waits in the northeast of the Hellfire Citadel and guards the blueprints for the Demon Incinerator. This item is particularly important, as many missions initially fail because they cannot counter “First Strike”!

The ghostly telescope waits in a cave in the south of the jungle, guarded by the undead Captain Eisenbart. In addition to the blueprint, the bony fellow sometimes leaves behind a toy as well, so the spawn point will likely be permanently besieged by players.

A demon has snagged the blueprints for the high-performance fog lights. Xanzith the Immortal waits in the northeast of the jungle, by the throne of Kil’jaeden. Since this is an elite area, you should definitely be with a group!

The Icebreaker can be obtained from the demon forge of Cindral the Blazing. To summon him, all fragments of Cindral must be defeated first, only then does the fire elemental appear.

The equipment piece “Trained Sharks” can be obtained from the Elite Boss Enemy Wild Whale Shark, who usually swims in the sea off Ironjaw Harbor. Note that you need a multitude of players for this opponent. All players must be in the water, otherwise, the opponent heals completely within seconds. The problem is that even well-equipped tanks die within one or two hits. To defeat the whale, it is therefore necessary to die multiple times and simply return to the fight as a ghost.

You can obtain the True Iron Rudder from Zoug the Block, who is also in Ironjaw Harbor. Like most enemies in the jungle, he can be easily defeated alone.

The perfect fleet
A truly perfect combination of ships is rarely possible in World of Warcraft. However, with the components mentioned above, you can counter most dangers and thus minimize the risk of defeat. All components can be repurchased for 500 garrison resources each at your shipyard – it doesn’t always make sense to want to complete every mission with 100%, but especially for the particularly lucrative tasks, one should incorporate some pieces into the ships!
