At the beginning of winter, we at Mein-MMO look back at the last months.
Christmas is approaching, one gets thoughtful, a bit nostalgic, and plump. Especially plump. But enough about me. Let’s get to Mein-MMO, to 2016, and a touch of nostalgia.
A year ago, there were still three of us on the author team: Cortyn, Andreas, and me. It sometimes got pretty cramped, and we heard criticism from you that we were neglecting games you wanted to read more about. The direction was clear: We need more experts, more writers!
Today, we have seven authors on the team. Tom is now an indispensable part of Mein-MMO, taking on most of the work on core titles like Destiny or The Division. Jürgen joined us a bit later, and his thing is the smaller and more exotic titles in the online scene. He also maintains contacts in the industry for us. Patrick, who joined us in the summer, focuses on GTA Online and Battlefield 1. He also helped manage the big “Pokémon GO” hysteria during the summer.
And we were also on television!
With the three “new” authors, we were able to cover many more games and topics in 2016 than in previous years. And for our core titles, we could dive even deeper, providing even more reading material, tips, and curiosities. This has also significantly reflected in our reader numbers. Compared to 2015, the number of our readers has tripled.
The seventh author, Leya, joined us in November. Her topics are Overwatch, Pokémon, and everything Pokémon-related, Ark: Survival Evolved, and League of Legends. Leya also has a penchant for looking beyond the horizon. In one of her first articles, she wrote about board games. We in the editorial team are all quite excited about Leya and are sure that you will be too soon.
We still find a lot of joy and fun in the site, and we think it’s great what kind of community has developed here over the years. You discuss under the articles, share, like, and comment on them on Facebook, talk in voice chat about our work, and recommend our site. We hope that you continue to do so in the future!

Cortyn’s joy for Overwatch is clearly declining. The “special” aspect of the game is gradually fading away.
Honey, we need to talk. Over the last few months, I’ve played a lot of Overwatch – even before the official release, I was in the beta. With a player level beyond 300, I can certainly say that Overwatch was worth the money and has provided me with many hours of fun, but it’s slowly declining.
In the ranked game mode, I believe I have reached my peak – with a skill rating of just over 3000, I am very satisfied and I don’t think I can rise much further. At least not if I don’t want to invest more time into the game than I’m comfortable with.
But the real problem for me is the Quick Match mode. The fact that they have taken away the opportunity to play multiple identical heroes has restricted my fun more than I anticipated.
Every few games, there was a “crazy” round where one side decided to play 4 Torbjörns, 5 Bastions, or even 6 Reinhardts. That was not the norm and usually only one of the two sides opted for such a “stacking” strategy. It was funny, it was absurd, it was relatively rare. And even if you got “hammered” – hey, it was just a single round. But that’s no longer the case because multiple heroes have been banned in Quick Match for quite a while now.
A team can never have enough Torbjörns. At least occasionally.
Sure, there is the “No Limits” game mode, which should actually match my expectations since all heroes can appear multiple times. But that is not the case. In the “No Limits” mode, every round is “Let’s stack hero X” – it is not special. It is not a fun surprise. It is boring because “group consisting only of X” faces “group consisting only of Y” – every time.
Even worse is the “All Brawls” mode. There are a few really fun brawls. But there are also infinitely boring ones. If I have to play the “Only Mercy and Pharah” brawl one more time, I’m going to bang my head on the keyboard until it’s over. That you can no longer filter here or at least “exclude” 1-2 brawls (like in battlegrounds in WoW) is terrible.
Only Pharahs and Mercys. Everyone shoots, but nothing happens. For 10 minutes.
Don’t get me wrong. Overwatch is still an outstanding game and one of the best games of 2016 (at least for me), but the recent changes have ruined the fun for me in most game modes.
Sure, one might say that Overwatch has bigger issues, like matchmaking or problems with cheaters. But none of those things are as acute for me as the dwindling enjoyment that many modes can no longer provide me.
The mammoth project Star Citizen comments on the crisis at Crytek.
Crytek (Far Cry, Crysis) is in a financial crisis. Salaries to employees have not been paid. The company recently announced that it would part ways with the studios in Budapest, Seoul, Shanghai, Sofia, and Istanbul. It only wants to keep the locations in Frankfurt and Kyiv, focusing on its core business.
At Star Citizen, a heavily modified version of the CryEngine, a product of Crytek, is used, but there is reassurance: The crisis at Crytek will “not affect” Star Citizen “one bit.” This was communicated by the “Director of Communication” via email in response to an inquiry from the US site Polygon.

Better Matchmaking!
Matchmaking has always been a constant source of frustration for many players of World of Tanks. Therefore, in 2017, it will also be revised. Known annoyances will be eliminated. In the future, there should be a better distribution of tanks across teams. Where previously one side had five tank destroyers but no heavies, while the other side had no TDs and five heavy tanks, the available tank pool should soon be distributed as fairly as possible.
Additionally, there will only be a maximum of three artillery vehicles per team. Tank teams will only be a maximum of three tiers apart in the new matchmaking. Also cool: there will soon be light tanks up to tier 10. These fast, maneuverable, and well-armed killers are meant to make gameplay at high tiers even more dynamic.
Our World of Tanks Will Be More Beautiful!
Since the eye also plays a role, extensive innovations are planned for the game engine and graphics in 2017. As a product of arcane, frost, and fire magic, Calamir showers players with various effects. Overwatch has released a new comic “Reflection” today. It features the lively hero, Tracer, alongside a red-haired young woman in a cozy Christmas scene.
Today, the comic “Reflection” was released on the Overwatch homepage, telling a Christmas story. While several heroes appear in the comic, the focus is on a revelation that fans have been waiting for.
Blizzard stated last year that there will be various sexual orientations in Overwatch. The characters of Overwatch should be diverse enough that everyone can see themselves in them, regardless of race, religion, or sexual orientation.
Overwatch: Tracer likes girls
However, it was never specified which heroes are precisely heterosexual, bisexual, lesbian, or gay, or belong to a completely different sexual orientation. With today’s comic, it was revealed thatTracer apparently lives with a young woman named Emily. They cuddle in the comic and kiss each other.

Thus, Tracer is one of the first characters in Overwatch whose sexuality is being examined more closely. Appropriately: Tracer is also considered the cover girl of Overwatch and was the first heroine to receive a port to Heroes of the Storm.
Tracer is the first openly gay or bisexual heroine in Overwatch. During the BlizzCon 2016, Blizzard had already announced that they want to reveal more about the diverse heroes. This also includes their love lives.
Especially “Widowtracer” is a popular pairing among fans. But is there anything to it? Probably not.
Tracer is the first character of whose sexuality we now know more. The Overwatch community has long speculated that Tracer is attracted to women. Fan art and fan stories often depict Tracer and Widowmaker as a couple.
This would reveal the first gay or bisexual character (LGBT) in Overwatch. Tracer apparently has a girlfriend named Emily. It’s nice that, as announced back then, they emphasize that it’s “not a big deal.”
Why we are only minimally involved in the development of Overwatch is revealed by Jeff Kaplan with funny examples from programming everyday life.
While Overwatch regularly offers its players new updates with special events, maps, or occasionally a new hero, fans are not really satisfied with the supply. In particular, the long waiting times frustrate some players, as does the fact that they are often faced with “accomplished facts”.
Developers of Overwatch repeatedly mention that they are currently “experimentally” working on some new game modes that ultimately never reach the players. Either because the modes simply “aren’t fun” or are difficult to balance.
Some players wish that these modes could at least be tried out in the “Custom Game” area, so that the community could experiment with them. Jeff Kaplan then explained in the forum what exactly these experimental modes look like – they are nothing that can be shown to the public.
“When we play our maps internally, it looks like gray mush with a few light effects. When we test new features, they often don’t even have an interface, and things can only be executed via console commands.”
Testing new heroes is similarly entertaining. Here, one does not first complete a hero entirely, but considers the abilities and then uses things that are already in the game.
“For Ana, we used Widowmaker’s model internally. For Sombra, we used Symmetra’s model and animations. For her abilities, we didn’t even have proper visual effects. Often, when we test a new hero and he or she uses their ultimate ability, we just write ‘ULT’ in big letters above their head. (…) It takes a lot of imagination to envision what it will look like once it’s finished.”
Symmetra was the “test model” for Sombra.
Earlier, it was even “worse”:
“The best example is probably the first test of Overwatch. The entire map was gray and angular, and the only hero was Tracer. We had no visual effects or assignments, so Tracer was constantly firing lasers from her eyes.”
For the future, Kaplan hopes to be able to release some videos from these early test versions so that the community can better understand why they will never be able to play something.
Shadow’s Kiss could fill an interesting niche as a vampire MMO.
Many players were looking forward to a dark vampire MMO, but after the cancellation of CCP Games’ World of Darkness in the summer of 2014, things looked rather bleak. However, World of Darkness has inspired successors. On one hand Dogma: Eternal Night, on the other: Shadow’s Kiss.
The game studio Clockwork Throne Inc. wants to immerse you in a world of darkness where eroticism plays a role. At the start, you create a freshly “born” vampire, where you even determine his sexual orientation. And since Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire we know the role of eroticism for the undead. But don’t worry, the bloodsuckers don’t sparkle in the sunlight, as was the case in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight.

You explore a large city, feed on humans, and make unsuspecting victims your subjects, who are obedient to you and complete tasks for you. There are no classes in the game. You choose the skills you might need before quests and then increase them while playing. Over time, you will become more powerful and can control not only humans but also undead, or transform into a demon that seduces humans. The more powerful you become, the greater your influence will be and you will want to expand your territory.

In the Asheron’s Call forum, players express their regret over the decision, stating that it was made with a heavy heart. They had a good run, one of the longest in MMORPG history. The team is proud to have worked on Asheron’s Call for almost 20 years for the community.
Asheron’s Call was released in 1999, a few months after Everquest, and has been in “standby” mode since 2014, meaning it was no longer developed. At its peak in the early 2000s, the game is said to have had around 120,000 players.
Asheron’s Call 2 was released in 2002, closed in December 2005 due to a lack of players, was reopened by Turbine in December 2012, and now announces its final closure in December 2016. It seems that December is the month of fate for the title.
