A new Overwatch event is being prepared. Initial voice lines hint at Valentine’s events.
Last year, Jeff Kaplan, the head of the development team behind Overwatch, announced that they are continuing to work on many seasonal events. In the data for patch 1.7, which is currently playable on the PTR and brings numerous balancing changes, new voice lines have already been noticed.
Data miners have already found some new lines in the files that could at least loosely relate to a Valentine’s event. The speakers here are primarily Mercy, Genji, and Hanzo. There are two new dialogues in which Genji and Mercy gift each other chocolate. As a native Swiss, Angela Ziegler knows, of course, that Swiss chocolate is the one true chocolate. Genji apparently knows this too, yet opts for different pralines, which Mercy seems to forgive him for – as her name suggests.
The relationship between Genji and Mercy has long been desired by some members of the fan fiction community. Recently, there were hints in the Christmas comic, where Genji wrote a letter to Mercy. Generally, a strong bond between the two seems likely, as Mercy saved Genji’s life after he was severely wounded by his brother Hanzo.
However, at the same time, a large fanbase may have its virtual heart broken if the hoped-for love between Pharah and Mercy (“Pharmercy”) never comes to fruition – the world can be so cruel.
Whether there will actually be an event for Valentine’s Day remains to be seen. There were also voice lines for New Year’s Day, without any use being found for them. These things may only be relevant for 2018, but are already included in the game data.
Cortyn says: Would anyone have liked it if Genji gifted his Mercy a box of Merci chocolates? No? Too bad.
Patch 1.7 also improves the kill feed in Overwatch – so you can lovingly see what kills you.
