Interestingly, the 3 heroines that appear most frequently in porn or in sexualized fan art correspond to certain patterns and archetypes: The Saint, the Whore, and the Virgin.
The most popular heroine for masturbation fantasies in the western world is Tracer. The 26-year-old British character seems carefree and childlike. Perhaps this implied sexual inexperience appeals to players: Tracer as a virgin doesn’t have any sexual experience and might therefore be less demanding. She lacks comparisons, making it impossible to embarrass herself sexually.
In a similar vein, D.Va, a 19-year-old professional gamer, and the 31-year-old Mei, an intellectual researcher who seems to be occupied with things other than sex, also fit into this narrative. In fan interpretations, she appears significantly more attractive than represented in the game – she embodies the well-known image of the shy wallflower who just needs to take off her glasses and let her hair down to become the school beauty.
After Tracer, Widowmaker is the second favorite among fans. She embodies the archetype of a woman who uses sex as a weapon. She is the only heroine who is sexualized in her backstory and presentation. Costumes typically emphasize her behind. However, in Blizzard’s story, she is the opposite of a lustful nymphomaniac, being incapable of feeling.
In third place is Mercy, the “Saint” – a kind of mother figure who should actually be sexually taboo, but – as Freud noted – this forbidden fruit tastes sweet.
Interestingly, the two darker women, Pharah and Symmetra, who are presented rather neutrally or attractively, seem to play the smallest role in sexualization, perhaps because they could be perceived as sexually intimidating – but are not sexualized to the same extent as Widowmaker.
Thus, the masculine Zarya is often more sexualized. Even though in interpretation she appears “softer and less angular” than in Blizzard’s original design. A similar phenomenon is also observable in the TV series “Game of Thrones,” where many characters like Brienne of Tarth or Tyrion Lannister correspond significantly more to our image of an attractive person than in the book template.

Whether they will take action against the latest “peak” of the sex mania, the Chinese sex toys with penis controllers remains to be seen.
