How do players perceive the heroines of Overwatch?
However, the exact subtleties of the character design are quite unimportant to fans of fan art or the porn featuring Overwatch heroines, as players create their own image.
Bastion, a combat robot, is transformed into a kind of walking vibrator in fan artworks. The normally cold Widowmaker becomes a nymphomaniac, and Blizzard’s statement, that they are so diverse that there are also homosexual heroes, leads to increased lesbian action in the porn clips. Poor Winston, intended as a “humorous element” meant to appeal to younger players, is repurposed for fetish and fur fantasies.
The willingness to interpret the Overwatch heroes goes quite far in fan culture. There is fan art or cosplay where male heroes are simply “feminized” and then played in their role.
The heavy Roadhog, for example, is transformed into an attractive lady with slight bondage undertones, and Genji and McCree are also reimagined as women.

On a deeper level, fans completely reshape the image of the heroines in their minds to align with their idealized visions. The phenomenon of taking an artistic or comic character so much that one believes they are living a real relationship with them is referred to in manga language as “Waifu.”
These tendencies may seem strange to many, but they are latent in Overwatch. This is what happens when a game places much emphasis on aesthetics and design, but only provides the rough parameters for the characters, leaving a lot of room to fill them with one’s own fantasies.
