Blizzard is currently working on many new cinematics for Overwatch. Fans can look forward to a complete “second season”!
Whether one loves or hates Overwatch, for one thing, everyone actually loves Blizzard’s shooter universe: the impressive cinematics.
The quality of the various videos, which last a few minutes, reaches that of a Pixar film and have managed to convey a dramatic atmosphere and tell a solid story impressively despite their brevity. However, since the release of “The Last Bastion,” there has not been a new cinematic apart from the release of Sombra, raising many questions after several months of silence:
Are these all the cinematics? Will Blizzard not release any new cinematics in “Year 2” of Overwatch?
In an interview with the colleagues from Polygon, Game Director Jeff Kaplan revealed a lot about the future of the cinematics. Story and video fans can breathe easy because many more little films are planned.
“The animated shorts are probably the thing we most enjoy creating. We love working with our animation team and can unearth stories that are not bound to gameplay – how can we tell the stories we want to tell?”
In general, Blizzard does not see the cinematics as standalone works but thinks of them in seasons.
“They [the animated videos] take a lot of time. We think of them in seasons. That’s how we talk about them internally too. The first season started with “Recall” and ended with “The Last Bastion.”
Kaplan did not yet provide an exact release date for the first video of the second season. However, they are making “good progress,” which gives hope that we may be able to admire new cinematics as early as summer – at the latest by BlizzCon, it seems likely.
There will soon be reason to dance in Overwatch as well – because new dance emotes are coming!
