The End of the Testing Phase – The Start of Season 2
Since the original release of Overwatch, a lot has changed in the game – especially the Ranked mode is still in constant flux. In the second season, players will have a very different experience than in the first season. We have summarized all the known changes and will update this post as soon as more news are available.
When Does Season 2 of Overwatch Start?
Season 2 starts on September 6. In Europe, this might extend into the night of September 7.
What Changes in Season 2 of Overwatch?
The biggest change occurs in the area of skill ratings. This is no longer restricted to a value between 1 and 100 but now ranges from 1 – 5000. Additionally, there will be certain “tiers” (most likely “divisions”) in which players will be sorted. The divisions have the following skill rating limits:

| Silver | 1500-1999 |
| Gold | 2000-2499 |
| Platinum | 2500-2999 |
| Diamond | 3000-3499 |
| Master | 3500-3999 |
| Grandmaster | 4000-5000 |
The special thing about the divisions is that you cannot “fall out” of Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond, even if your skill rating drops. Only Master and Grandmaster must continuously fight for the highest positions – but may also be rewarded with a spot in the “Top 500”.
Furthermore, players can only sign up as a group for the ranked mode if their skill rating is within a range of 1000 points. For example, players with a skill rating of 2000 and 2200 can play together. However, players with a skill rating of 1200 and 3600 cannot. This is intended to prevent undesirable behavior and also to combat matchmaking issues.
Changes to Mechanics and Currency
There are also some modifications to the different game modes. For example, there is now a “Timebank” feature on hybrid maps, and the coin toss has been removed. Instead, it is now (in very rare cases) possible for there to actually be a draw. In this case, both sides receive a small amount of Competitive Points.
Competitive Points are, by the way, the last major change. These will be multiplied by 10 for all players – however, the cost of golden weapons will also increase by the same factor. A golden weapon now costs 3,000 Competitive Points, but a win also brings 10 Competitive Points – the reward at the end of the season will also be higher to compensate for this. In addition, there is a cap! If you have 6,000 Competitive Points, you should start spending them – because no more can be accumulated.
Finally, participation in Season 2 will again be rewarded with a special display image and a spray logo. However, it is necessary to complete at least 10 placement matches – these will also be back in Season 2.
