The Summer Games of Overwatch had a pretty bumpy start. A bug meant that numerous players couldn’t even play.
The Summer Games of Overwatch are live and mean new loot boxes, skins, and lots of fun for players – at least in theory. In practice, the release of the event was quite bumpy.
While most players struggled with wait times at the login servers and had to wait up to an hour just to be allowed into the game, there were more bugs. Queues of over 50,000 players were piling up at the login servers.
The never-ending search for a match – without mercy
Those who wanted to play Copa Lúcioball – the competitive mode of Lúcioball – could manage a round or two. But then (some earlier, others later) a bug appeared and players were stuck in the search forever. It couldn’t be canceled either. Even restarting the game or turning it off for hours did not help.
As soon as one logged back into Overwatch, they were still in the search, which never seemed to end.
The most frustrating part is that the whole game was blocked. No one could join groups or play quick matches with friends – Overwatch was dead for the evening. Especially annoying for those who had kept their evening free just to game together. There are even some of those in our editorial team.
It wasn’t until nearly 8 hours later, at 3:00 AM, that the bug was fixed.
We can only hope that the event goes off without further issues now.
Thus, the old Blizzard rule has proven true again: Never play on patch day.
