The loot boxes in Overwatch are not as random as you think. We reveal the hard facts behind the boxes.
On average, every 10th box contains a legendary item
Opening loot boxes is one of the most enjoyable yet frustrating moments in Overwatch. But how high is the chance of getting something really cool from the loot boxes? Our colleagues at pcgamesn have looked at the opening of 500 loot boxes and came to the following values:
Already during the closed beta, Blizzard announced that there is no real “randomness” in their games. Just before that, it had been discovered for Hearthstone that every 40 packs contains a guaranteed Legendary – a similar system seems to occur in Overwatch as well.
On average, every 10th box contains a legendary item. By the way, the “grace period” is 24 boxes, meaning: In the 25th loot box, a legendary item is guaranteed if you had no luck in the previous 24 boxes.
There is also a similar limit for epic items, but it’s significantly lower. On average, you get an epic item every third to fourth (exactly: 3.3) box – but one is guaranteed by the 10th box at the latest.
Credits – always just a bonus
In addition to the direct rewards, credits can also be included in the loot boxes. With these, specific items can be purchased, instead of relying on pure luck. Credits come in three different amounts, depending on their rarity.
- Rare – 50 credits (13.9% of all rare items)
- Epic – 150 credits (33.8% of all epic items)
- Legendary – 500 credits (13.9% of all legendary items)
An additional feature: Credits can never be the only “rare” (or better) object in a loot box. They are always just an addition. Presumably so that no one feels bad for having received “only” credits.
Please note that this data is not 100% confirmed, but so far there have been no statements claiming otherwise.
