Ingenuous players are already collecting loot boxes in Overwatch to have skins for the new hero Ana ready at release. There is just one problem: It doesn’t help.
Loot is generated upon obtaining the box
It actually sounds like a pretty clever plan. Before the new hero from Overwatch, Ana Amari, is released in a few weeks, one is already accumulating a lot of loot boxes. The thought behind it seems logical: The more boxes you already have, the higher the chance to snag some nice skins, voice lines, and spray logos on the day of Ana’s release.
But that’s exactly not possible.
Blizzard has reiterated through community manager Lylirra that hoarding loot boxes does not help, because:
“Contents of loot boxes are generated at the moment you purchase or earn them, NOT when they are opened.
This means that any loot boxes you buy or earn now or at any time before Ana is released will have no chance of containing cosmetic items for her. Only those loot boxes that you earn after she is live and playable on your platform can contain her skins, sprays, voice lines, emotes, and more (this is how our system works and will continue to work for future updates).”
In plain terms, this means: Just open all the loot boxes you already have, as they can’t contain skins for Ana in the future. Anyone considering throwing some hard-earned euros at the problem should wait until Ana is truly available. Otherwise, the money is probably wasted. However, there is no reason not to play currently, as the credits earned from loot boxes can be used to unlock Ana’s cosmetic items specifically.
