Leveling helps you in Overwatch mainly to earn loot boxes that you receive with each level up. Loot boxes always contain a cosmetic item that allows you to customize your heroes individually. The randomness determines which items pop out of the loot box, and they can be of common, rare, epic, or legendary quality. Duplicate items can be converted into credits, which can be used to unlock items of your choice.
To reach a new level, you need to accumulate a certain amount of EXP. The amount of EXP you need to reach the next level can be seen either on the bar that appears at the bottom of the screen after a game or in the player profile.

Playing
You need to play to level up. That sounds quite logical and simple. However, you should keep in mind that you need to stay active while playing to earn your EXP. Standing AFK in the base does not earn any EXP and is also unfair to your team. If you also want to earn some extra EXP, you can do this with your first victory of the day. Every 24 hours, you can receive a bonus of 1500 EXP once you have achieved your first win.
Play with friends for the group bonus
If you go into battle with a group, you get a group bonus of 20% more EXP. Each group member (2-6 players) receives the 20% bonus. So it doesn’t hurt to send a few friendship invites to random players you can go on an extra EXP hunt with. If you see friends online, don’t hesitate to invite them into a group.
Stay in the queue
You get 200 extra EXP for each consecutive game. To do this, you must stay in the queue as a single player without checking the menu in between. So if you go one game after another, you earn 200 EXP on top for each round, regardless of whether you win or lose.
If you join a game that is already in progress, you even receive a bonus of 400 EXP. This is probably because you usually land in a team that has lost a member mid-game and thus incurred a deficit. However, you shouldn’t rely on this bonus as it is random whether you get thrown into a running game or start at the beginning.
Earn medals
At the end of a round, players can earn medals for special achievements. Gold medals are worth 150 EXP, silver medals 100 EXP, and bronze medals 50 EXP. However, these are not cumulative. You get the EXP bonus for the highest medal you earn. So always aim for at least a gold medal for the maximum medal bonus.
Winning – The victory brings a lot
Every completed round generally gives a player 250 EXP, regardless of whether they win or lose. With each win, you get an additional 500 EXP on top. However, winning is easier said than done, and even the best players lose regularly. To win in Overwatch, you need to assemble your team well and be able to communicate with your teammates. Try to get your whole team in the chat, be friendly, and make constructive suggestions.
