Overwatch is working on improving its spectator mode and is introducing displayed health bars for the viewers.
The spectator mode in Overwatch has so far been a complete disaster. Overwatch is a fast-paced hero shooter where players are constantly involved in intense battles. This makes it difficult to keep track – and the spectator mode simply does not do justice to the continuous action in Overwatch.
There are no indicators showing which champion has charged their ultimate or a detailed scoreboard. Blizzard is aware of this problem and wants to address it by adding new displays to Overwatch’s spectator mode. In this video, YouTuber ggDoA showcases the effect of the new health bars on the PTR. These clearly show which champion has lost their shield or who is rapidly losing health.
Improvements to Spectator Mode are important for eSports potential
What may be seen here as a minor adjustment on the PTR is already a significant improvement for the viewer. Blizzard intends to create a major eSports title with Overwatch and wants to further professionalize eSports with the Overwatch League.
Clear symbols and displays help the viewer to see at a glance which team is in the lead or why a team is currently holding back. If Overwatch wants to establish itself in eSports, the game needs exactly this clarity in spectator mode. This can significantly expand the fanbase and also reach viewers who do not know Overwatch in detail.

By introducing the displayed health bars, Blizzard is taking a first step in a desirable direction for the viewers. The health bars were activated in the last update on the PTR without appearing in the patch notes.
What would you wish for the spectator mode? There have been more changes on the PTR, by the way, D.Va was hit hard with the nerf bat.
