The Overwatch League is a huge event where players have to give their all day after day. For some, it becomes too much, like Pine from New York Excelsior. He needed a break and then returned to dominate with Widowmaker.
Professional gamers playing on the big stages carry a lot of pressure. They give their all at all times, and cannot disappoint their team and the fans. They must perform wherever they can, ideally more than is even possible.
When the pressure becomes too overwhelming, players can find it difficult to cope, and the team suffers as a result. In such cases, a break is appropriate, as was the case with the star DPS player from New York Excelsior, Pine.
Stress and Panic – His Team Wins Without Him
Pine was considered one of the best DPS players right from the start of the Overwatch League. With hitscan heroes like McCree or Widowmaker, he seemed untouchable and helped his team reach the top of the leaderboard.
However, in the second phase of the eSports event, not much was seen of Pine. He withdrew from training and subsequently from the games. The pressure and other circumstances weighed heavily on him. So much so that he experienced panic attacks and phases of depression.
Homesickness particularly affected him. This circumstance clearly highlights how young many of the players are. Pine is only 20 and already lives half a globe away from home. Naturally, he misses friends, home, and also home-cooked meals.
His team, New York Excelsior, became champions in the second phase without him. He himself is unhappy about it, but it was necessary. During this time, he preferred to focus on getting fit for upcoming challenges.
Strengthened Return – Pine’s Widowmaker Starts to Shine!
The break seems to have done Pine good and has apparently helped him. Since the beginning of the third phase, he has been back in active training and in the team roster, ready to rock the stage with New York Excelsior.
He is not only getting back to his old form, he is surpassing his already outstanding performance from earlier. In every match he has been used, he has dealt significant damage to his opponents. Even top teams like Seoul Dynasty and the LA Gladiators were not safe from him.
Pine has even expanded his role as a sharpshooter. It is no longer enough for him to intercept opponents from a defensive position. Instead of monitoring an area, Pine simply goes out to clear and secure the path for his team.
