Jeff Kaplan from Overwatch is suspected of having trolled all fans. Did he announce a new hero days ago?
The development team of Overwatch is particularly good at hiding small clues within the game world. During the beta, there were hidden clues about Junkrat and Roadhog, later hints about Ana and Sombra. But even outside the game, there were always small teasers, sometimes even hidden in the code of websites.
In an interview for the launch of the “Anniversary” event, Jeff Kaplan, the Game Director of Overwatch, explained what is coming up for players in the future. The sentence at the very end stands out: “There is also some really cool hero news just on the horizon” – loosely translated to “Some hero news is on the horizon.”
“Just on the horizon” is a pretty common phrase in English – but it could have a double meaning here. Just recently, Blizzard released some images of the “Moon Base Horizon” – where the gorilla Winston was raised and genetically altered. By now, fans are sure that “Moon Base: Horizon” will be the next playable map.
Wordplay and Announcement?
If that was intentional – and currently it seems that way – then Jeff Kaplan has cleverly led the fan community astray and is probably laughing to himself now. He had already provided a small teaser days before that no one understood and only makes sense in retrospect – one of Blizzard’s specialties. For instance, in World of Warcraft, the area “Suramar” was hinted at in the names of some capes during “Warlords of Draenor”.
Whether we can really expect a new hero soon remains to be seen. But at least a new map on the moon seems very likely – and maybe the hero “Hammond” will come too…
In any case: brilliant wordplay. That also explains Kaplan’s slight grin…
