The huntresses will soon go hunting to take down a yeti. What sounds like Evolve is actually Overwatch – a new game mode is coming as a winter event for Christmas 2017.
The seasonal events in Overwatch are among the most popular offerings for fans of the shooter. In 2017, the “Winter Wonderland” of Overwatch will return, bringing plenty of new skins, emotes, and other cosmetic upgrades.
In a new Developer Update, Game Director Jeff Kaplan discussed the innovations taking place in the Winter Event 2017 of Overwatch.
Overwatch Winter Event 2017 makes Mei the yeti huntress
Mei’s snowball fight is back this year, but the real highlight is likely “Mei’s Yeti Hunt.”
In this game mode, a total of 5 players, all playing as Mei, face off against a Winston. The twist: Winston is also controlled by a player! The Mei huntresses must take down Winston as quickly as possible, as he is weak at the start of the match and can barely defend himself against the hunters’ fire.
Winston must first collect power-ups in the form of meat, which gradually fill up his ultimate. Only when he can activate “Primal Rage” does he become truly dangerous. This forces the Meis to use their abilities to survive the onslaught of the angry yeti gorilla.
If the yeti dies or has defeated enough Meis, the match ends.
The event starts on December 12 – that’s next week!
Cortyn says: Just from the description, the mode strongly reminds me of Evolve – the “yeti monster” has to gather power-ups at the start because he is still weak, while the Mei huntresses aim to take him down. Only when the yeti has eaten enough meat does he level up and become a real threat – suddenly, the hunters are on the defensive! Of course, the mode will be significantly sillier and shorter-lived than Evolve, but it promises to be a fun diversion nonetheless.
