In South Korean PC bangs, there is a shift. Overwatch is displacing the long-time leader League of Legends.
Overwatch narrowly ahead of League of Legends
In recent weeks, we have reported that Overwatch has had a great start in South Korean PC bangs. These “bangs” are essentially internet cafes where visitors often spend many hours playing various games – in a cozy atmosphere with various snacks.
After an already good result post-release, Overwatch has now ramped up and displaced League of Legends from the top spot of the most played games in PC bangs.
Just over a week ago, Overwatch was able to retain 14.7% of players. With an impressive 29.21%, Overwatch has now narrowly taken the lead, relegating League of Legends to second place with “only” 28.80% (as of: 15.06.2016). This is the first time in four years that LoL has had to relinquish its position. League of Legends has also lost many players to Overwatch in recent days. A week ago, LoL still had over 35%.
Whether this is just a temporary change that will soon fizzle out or truly the big “shift” for the most played game in South Korea will be revealed in the coming weeks.
However, even if Overwatch should fall again, Blizzard’s shooter has managed to shake up the lists of popular games a bit. In any case, the California developers have succeeded once again in creating a game that attracts players from all genres and even excites those who usually have no interest in shooters.
