The open beta of Overwatch starts. We have all the information you need.
Update 01:25 AM: If you cannot download the game on PC, simply restart the battle.net software; that should fix the problem. There was also a delay in the PlayStation Store, and the issues should now be resolved.
Update 02:00 AM: Some players cannot see friends in the list on PC and cannot join their games or change the region to “Europe”. Blizzard is working on the issue.
Update 02:40 AM: At least the region selection issue has been resolved. Restart the Battle.net client and you can set “Europe” as the region in the dropdown menu.
The open beta of Overwatch starts on May 5 at 1:00 AM
The long months of waiting come to an end tonight. Overwatch, the hero shooter from Blizzard, starts tonight, on May 5, 2016, at 1:00 AM, in the open beta.
This means: Everyone can try the game for free for almost 5 days to get a feel for it. The open beta will be accessible to all interested parties until May 9 at 7:00 PM, after which the game will disappear into its final break until the release on May 24.
What happens to the progress?
It is important to know that the progress made will not be carried over to the final version of the game. So, if you are currently opening loot boxes diligently and leveling up your player, you will lose this at the end of the beta. Blizzard wants all players to start “from zero” at the official release of the game and will therefore perform a reset of all accounts.
How does the download work? Will my computer run Overwatch?
To play, the game must first be downloaded. But this is very easy.
On the PC, you just need to have the Battle.net launcher running and select the “Overwatch” menu item. The big button marked “Install” is hard to miss. However, you should check if your computer meets the minimum system requirements:
- Operating System: Windows 7/8/10
- CPU: Intel Core i3 or AMD X3 8650
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460, ATI Radeon HD 4850 or Intel HD Graphics 4400
- RAM: 4GB RAM
- HDD: 30GB of free hard disk space
On consoles, the process is only slightly more complicated. You just need to open the shop page of PlayStation 4 or Xbox One and search for “Overwatch”; you should find the entry “Overwatch: Open Beta”. Just select “Download” for this menu item, and after the download is complete, you can start playing the game.
Note that the download on PS4, Xbox One, and PC cannot start until 1:00 AM. And if you want to get off to a good start, be sure to read the following article: Overwatch Guide: The 4 Best Heroes for Beginners
