More hints about a new game mode for Overwatch are emerging. Do you have what it takes to be a Gladiator?
In Overwatch, we are strongly approaching the next in-game event, the first anniversary of the game – or the “Overwatch Anniversary Event”. Just yesterday, Blizzard released a first teaser showcasing three new maps that will debut with the Anniversary Event in Overwatch. Unlike initially suspected, the three new maps are not for the “3vs3” and “1vs1” game modes, but for a brand new arena mode.
This has become particularly notable as several clever dataminers have found numerous sound files in the game files.
According to reports, players can hear Athena greeting them in the arena first (as with any other map) and then giving them titles.
Apparently, players can earn titles like “Challenger” or “Gladiator”, which presumably relate directly to their performance in the game.
Items or Power-Ups in Overwatch?
It is also odd that many heroes now have a voice line where they rejoice over receiving an (apparently random) item. For instance, you can hear Reinhardt asking: “What an incredible treasure is this?”
And even Winston lets out a bit of his gorilla side and wonders: “Ooo-Ooo, what did I just get?”
So it is possible that characters will receive different buffs to gain an advantage in the arena. On Reddit, people are also speculating that it could be “a bit like Super Smash Bros.” – but expectations might be set too high there.
How exactly a match in the arena will play out is still unclear. We will probably find out on May 23, when the Overwatch Anniversary Event officially starts and brings – alongside the arena mode – many new cosmetic items.
What it means to collect Reaper souls is explained by Jeff Kaplan in an amusing video.
