The latest cinematic of Overwatch shows the siege of Eichenwalde and how Reinhardt lost his eye.
Contrary to initial expectations, BlizzCon 2017 is full of new announcements and cinematics related to all Blizzard games. Among them was not only the announcement of the Overwatch hero Moira but also a new cinematic: For Glory and Honor.
Anyone who has looked at the Eichenwalde map carefully will surely have recognized the armor in the “Throne Room” of the map, lying lifelessly on the chair. From Reinhardt’s various skins, we know that it belonged to Balderich von Adler. But who is he, really?
The cinematic finally answers what exactly happened in Eichenwalde.
Because of Reinhardt, Balderich had to die
Eichenwalde is a castle near Stuttgart, and a large part of the Crusaders is stationed there – a German elite unit of “knights” that supports the military, provides fire support, and maintains order at the front when regular military equipment fails. Balderich von Adler was considered the most powerful Crusader and therefore received an invitation from Overwatch to join the agents.
However, at that very moment, the siege of Eichenwalde begins – the Omnics are attacking. The Crusaders defend their assigned teams. At least all except Reinhardt. He prefers to be at the front and puts himself in danger. Only through Balderich’s intervention does it remain a wound to the eye. Balderich, however, is severely injured during the rescue.
Ultimately, Balderich sacrifices himself so that the remaining soldiers can reach safety.
Another sad chapter from the lore of Overwatch. Who would have thought that Reinhardt himself was responsible for the death of his mentor – and that this was the very reason he ended up in the Overwatch team?
At least Reinhardt seems to be right with one saying – “My hair was amazing!”
