Overwatch: 15 million players – a groundbreaking success for Blizzard

Blizzard has announced the player numbers of Overwatch – and they are breaking all records and exceeding all expectations. Blizzard is therefore in a pretty good position.

Overwatch breaks a lot of records

Even during the beta of Overwatch, it was apparent that Blizzard’s hero shooter was going to be a huge success again. During the “Activision-Blizzard Investor Call,” Blizzard had to disclose some numbers – there seemed to be no need to beautify them in any way. Even during the open beta, Overwatch recorded over 10 million players – and the game was still free.

In total, 15 million players worldwide have decided to purchase the shooter. This also includes players in internet cafes and individual players who share a console and play on multiple accounts.

Overall, players in Overwatch have now spent more than 500 million hours playing. If our math doesn’t fail us, that’s a total playtime of more than 57,000 years!

According to the investor call, there is also plenty of content for Overwatch in the works, with the Summer Games being just the “first step” and players can look forward to many more innovations.

A particular success is being celebrated by the game in China. There, it has replaced “Diablo 2” as the fastest-selling PC game. Similarly successful is the game in Korea, where Overwatch is number 1 in the “PC bangs”, the gaming internet cafes of the country. 30% of total playtime currently belongs to Overwatch.

Interestingly: Overwatch displaces LoL as the most popular game in Korea – after 4 years at the top!

Although this is just speculation, Blizzard is also well positioned for the next quarter. A new expansion for Hearthstone (“A Night in Karazhan”) is lurking, and World of Warcraft will receive its latest expansion “Legion”.
