The bitterly charming colony simulation RimWorld is already one of the best games on Steam. Now, with a new expansion, it raises the bar even higher.
What game are we talking about? RimWorld is officially a sci-fi colony simulation and the best of its kind on Steam. Players must build a civilization on an alien planet while confronting various dangers of space.
However, what makes it special are the freedoms that RimWorld allows. Players report absolutely ridiculous stories on Steam, while MeinMMO demon Cortyn prefers to enslave children and have them work in mines.
With the latest expansion “Odyssey,” colonists have been able to build spaceships since July 11, 2025, and explore the universe with their flying base – and it’s being received very well.
“1,000 out of 10, but you might want to expect only a 900 out of 10”
Here’s the current status of RimWorld: The new DLC has given the popular colony sim a significant boost, catapulting it into the top 15 most played games on Steam, where RimWorld stands alongside giants like Counter-Strike 2, Stardew Valley, GTA 5, and Palworld (via SteamDB).
With the release of Odyssey, the player count has doubled, from around 30,000 players in June to 68,000 on Friday. Now, over the weekend, RimWorld has even set a new all-time record with more than 85,000 concurrent players – which is something that every expansion has achieved so far.
But it’s not only a quantitative surge in players; the DLC also impresses qualitatively: it sits at 95% positive reviews just two days after release, and like the base game, it is “extremely positive.” Here too, players are already reporting absurd experiences:
I built a wooden spaceship, landed in a lava field, it caught fire, and everyone died.
I had a tribe that lived in peaceful harmony under a glacier.
On the first day I shot myself into space with a launch site I found. I died immediately.
I built a complete fishing colony on a river.
I explored a ruin and died from a bomb that chased me through 5 rooms.
I had a village in an eternally dark mushroom forest that was always high on shrooms.
A 30-foot tall insect ripped the face off my favorite colonist. These are just a few of the thousands of stories I’ve experienced.

I would give Odyssey a modest 1,000 out of 10 because it perfectly fits my personal play style and lets me explore cool places. But I think you should keep your expectations in check and maybe only expect a 900 out of 10. Let me not overhype you.
Started with a Gravship.
Started above the North Pole. Spent the first 20 days trying to reach habitable land.
I had to kill two of my starting people so the third could survive.
He had a breakdown because he lost (and then ate) his friends, ran outside, and was killed by a polar bear.100/10, would give Tynan [the developer, note] my money again.

In addition to spaceships, the DLC also includes new biomes, paired with a landmark system, as well as new animals, quests, weapons, traps, and enemies. However, so much content comes at a price, and so Odyssey costs €23.49.
If you don’t own the base game yet, you can still grab it at a reduced price of €25.59 until July 24 and save more if you buy the base game and DLCs together in a bundle.
With 97% positive based on over 180,000 reviews, RimWorld belongs to the absolute top tier on Steam. Very few games reach this “God Tier” – we have presented you with 10 of them here on MeinMMO: Here are 10 games that reached the “God Tier” in reviews on Steam
