Hardware and Tech: The Japanese manufacturer Toyota has to close its plants for a whole day. The reason behind it is a lack of storage for new data.
Toyota is among the world’s largest car manufacturers and considers itself to be one of the 10 largest publicly traded companies in the world. This places the Japanese manufacturer (in production numbers) ahead of the German company VW.
What exactly was the problem? In its Japanese homeland, all assembly plants of Toyota Motor had to halt operations for an entire day.
There was no storage capacity left available on the servers. The company explained this in a statement (via asia.nikkei.com).
Servers were full after maintenance
Why can’t production continue? The servers were used to process orders for spare parts. Since these did not function properly due to lack of space, all Japanese plants had to halt operations.
The problem was then simply solved by transferring the data to a server with larger capacity. The company itself stated: The issue arose after a regular maintenance of the servers.
But many gamers are probably quite familiar with the annoyance of overflowing storage. But then it is at most the installation of a new game that is postponed and not the production of thousands of vehicles.
Storage hunger is growing in gaming
The problem with full storage is well known to many gamers. Many modern games are getting larger and therefore require more free storage space:
- Diablo 4 requires about 90 GB of free storage space on an SSD.
- Starfield requires more than 120 GB of free storage space according to system requirements on an SSD.
Storage space is, however, a component where people tend to save money. It is only later that a larger hard drive or SSD is purchased afterward. Because upgrading a gaming PC with more storage is often not a big effort. The majority of players are still not prepared that games will become larger and more comprehensive in the future.
At least: A new SSD or hard drive is not very expensive, especially when compared to an expensive graphics card. Many games now require an SSD, which has various practical reasons. If you want to upgrade, go for an SSD or M2.SSD, provided your motherboard has the appropriate slot.
