A Hostile World
What is the film about? Prospect tells a small, intensively staged story. A father and his daughter Cee land on a forest moon to search for valuable gemstones.
During their search, they unexpectedly encounter two other men who are also searching for the stones. One of them is Ezra, played by Pedro Pascal. At first, the four want to team up, but then a conflict arises. What exactly happens next, we don’t want to reveal here.
Just this much: The struggle for survival on the planet intensifies. Mercenaries and other dangers make life difficult for the protagonists. Trust in one’s companions is also called into question.
What makes the film good? The directors have created a film with Prospect that, despite a low budget of only about €3.4 million, looks excellent, provides a dense atmosphere, and features great actors. Variety even compares the film to Star Wars. Although the actual vision is significantly more modest than in George Lucas’s saga, it often evokes that feeling.
Despite its reduced story, Prospect feels like a part of a larger universe. This is how the spin-offs to Star Wars should feel, according to the review from Variety.
Critics also praise Pedro Pascal’s performance. The actor effectively portrays the manipulative nature of his character on screen.
Speaking of the screen: Prospect is one of those films that never came to theaters in Germany. After its premiere at the South by Southwest film festival in the USA, it was shown in some cinemas there, but was released directly on streaming, such as on Amazon Prime Video, here. Many genre fans may not know Prospect for this reason.
