The popular MMORPG Guild Wars 2 has broken its own peak player record on Steam. And the trend continues.
What is the status of Guild Wars 2? Many new players and veterans are currently rejoining the MMORPG Guild Wars 2. So many that the MMORPG has now broken its own peak player record on Steam. The old record from the Steam release of the game was set in September 2022 with 8,324 players. Now it has been surpassed on July 27, 2025, with 8,343 players (via SteamDB).
This allows the MMORPG to continue its growth trend. Since May 2025, the number of players on Steam has been steadily increasing. While on May 1st only 4,182 players logged in, this number has already doubled in less than 3 months.
Many players also experience the MMORPG not through Steam, but through the standalone launcher, which has been available since release. Although the numbers there are not public, it can be assumed that the game is also trending upward here.

Good sales and a new add-on
Why is Guild Wars 2 so successful right now? While the base game of Guild Wars 2 can be downloaded and played for free, the expansions of the MMORPG continue to be sold. Players have been able to enjoy significant discounts multiple times. Recently, there were up to 60% off the game’s add-ons during the Steam sale.
Since July 15, however, the number of players has been increasing even further, which is likely primarily due to the announcement of the sixth expansion of the game, Visions of Eternity. It brings new elite specializations for each class, new abilities for the skimmer, fresh content, and new areas calling for adventures filled with seafaring and wild magic.
The new expansion is scheduled to be released on October 28, 2025, but over 200,000 fans have already watched the trailer in various language versions, and the presentation of the first three specializations reached over 130,000 views on YouTube. The excitement among fans is already visible 3 months before the release.
Pre-orders for the new expansion Visions of Eternity are already underway, even though there are still 3 months until its release. Many players are looking forward to the new content.
